Welcome to Engineering Open House 2008...

Engineering Open House is a two day event held at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign to showcase the latest in science and technology from the university's professors, students, and sponsoring corporations. EOH annually attracts over 20,000 visitors to learn, experiment, and play with science. EOH is a great educational experience for all ages and many schools use EOH as a fieldtrip to show their students how science is important in everything around them. Engineering Open House has over 200 exhibits ranging from Concrete Crushing (a process to test the strength of construction material in an shattering way...), Liquid Nitrogen Table (take everyday objects and place them in -350F liquid nitrogen and see what happens to them), and many more.

Design Contest Winners

High School Design Contest (HSDC) was to build a Rube Goldburg Machine that uses a single starting point to start a 20 or more step process to assemble a full hamburger with bun, meat, and codiments without any further human intervention.

1st Place - Pekin High School with "Bun Top Diner"
2nd Place - Cornerstone Discovery Group with "Generic Scottish Diner"
3rd Place - Stark County High School with "Picnic in the Park"

Future Power - Direct Methanol Technology
by Independent
This project will consist of building a direct methanol fuel cell stack and using it to power a portable electronic device such as a CD player. The fuel cell will be supplied fuel with an air and water pump, plugged in to a powerstrip. If an extension cord is needed to supply power to the power strip, it will be taped and routed out of walkways to prevent tripping hazards. The fuel cell will generate heat not exceeding 50 degrees celsius. If the fuel cell becomes hot to the touch, it will be moved out of the reach of children and a warning sign will be placed on it. The fuel cell will also generate small amounts of carbon dioxide well below hazardous levels. The liquid fuel will consist of 3% methanol by volume in deionized water. It will be contained in a covered beaker and pumped in a small (1/8" ID) tube to the fuel cell, where it will be circulated through the cell and back into the beaker via an outlet tube. The cell contains graphite, platinum, nitrile, and nickel-coated brass, but these components will not be accessible to human contact due to the plastic casing of the fuel cell. The fuel cell will power an electric circuit not exceeding 4V and 1 amp DC. The circuit will power a small portable electronic device, most likely a cd player. All wires will be insulated and taped out of reach of small children.
Guidance in Robotics
by Dept. of Agricultural & Biological Engineering
This robot knows its location using a spinning laser beam that hits three sensors in a board. The phase differences among the signals tells us the relative angles with repect to the receivers. This is translated into coordinates in a computer, which then sends the location to the robot wirelessly.
